Two 'extinct' trees rediscovered in Africa

Two tree species once feared extinct have been discovered in a threatened coastal forest in the African country of Tanzania. The two species have made reappearances before, but both trees, one a legume, the other a member of the mint family, were thought to have finally been obliterated in recent years.

Botantists rediscovered the trees in the southeastern African nation in 2011. The country has offered up another, perhaps more striking, discovery in recent months: a colorful new snake species.

"Both trees are still in critical danger of extinction, given that fewer than 50 individuals of each species are known," Roy Gereau, a botanist with the Missouri Botanical Garden's Africa and Madagascar Department, said in a statement.

The species, Erythrina schliebenii, a type of coral tree, has spectacular red flowers and vicious spines along its trunk. The tree was collected only twice, in the 1930s, from an area later cleared for a cashew plantation.

It was listed as "Extinct" on the IUCN Red List in 1998, but was rediscovered in a small patch of unprotected forest in 2001. When that forest was cleared for a biofuel plantation in 2008, it was again feared the thorny tree had gone extinct.

The other tree species, Karomia gigas, was known from only a single specimen cut down a few years after it was first discovered in coastal Kenya in 1977.

Another specimen was discovered in 1993 nearly 400 miles (600 kilometers) away in a tiny fragment of forest in Tanzania, but a more recent search at the same site didn't uncover any of the trees.

Last year, botanists from Tanzania's University of Dar es Salaam set out to look for both species, and discovered small populations of both trees in a remote coastal forest in southeastern Tanzania.

There are indications that recent improvements in infrastructure, together with a rapid population increase, are putting the coastal forests of the region under increasing threats from degradation and clearing.

"Erythrina schliebenii has survived only because it grows in rocky areas that are not usually cleared for cultivation," University of Dar es Salaam botanist Cosmas Mligo said in a statement. "But even those areas will be cleared one day if nothing is done."

Buying A House For The First Time?

If you?re buying a house for the first time, don?t stress. This in-depth buyer?s guide can prepare first-time home buyers for the process of buying a house that fits your wants, needs, and budget. This buyer?s guide should help alleviate any unwanted stress when buying your first home.

#1 Get A Copy of Your Credit Report:

Your credit score does not just determine whether you?ll be able to secure a home loan, it will also determine what type of interest rate you?ll qualify for when securing a home loan. Generally, a home mortgage loan cannot be secured unless you have at least a 660 credit score. The better your credit score, the better interest rate you will receive. If your credit report shows outstanding or unpaid debts, maxed-out credit cards, late payments, liens, or a bankruptcy, you would probably be expected to apply a larger down payment in order to secure the loan ? if you were even approved for a home loan.

There are three major credit reporting agencies (credit bureaus) that creditors report to, Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian. It?s important to understand that you must check all three credit bureaus, as some creditors only report to one or two of the bureaus. There are many different companies out there offering ?Free Credit Reports? ? so proceed with caution. By law, all three credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax & Trans Union, must issue you a free credit report once a year.

#2 Contact A Mortgage Broker (Loan Officer):

You?ll want to contact a mortgage consultant or home loan lender and secure a pre-approval letter by providing some basic information. Keep in mind, there is a big difference between a ?pre-approval letter? and a ?pre-qualification letter.? A pre-qualification letter is as simple as calling a mortgage broker and asking for one (I?m serious). A pre-approval letter, on the other hand, requires proof and verification of all information provided.

A home loan pre-approval letter is important for many reasons, but I?ll name just a few. First and foremost, it tells you how much of a home loan you qualify for (how much money you can borrow). Second, a pre-approval letter tells your real estate agent that you are a serious buyer and it gives your real estate agent a definitive purchase price. Once your real estate agent knows your price range, the more specific he/she can be when searching for homes to show you. Third, a pre-approval letter gives you more leverage when negotiating with sellers. Generally, sellers prefer negotiating with pre-approved buyers because they know that pre-approved buyers are financially qualified to obtain financing to close the transaction.

#3 Find A Real Estate Agent (Realtor):

Finding a professional real estate agent is crucial when buying or selling a home. A qualified professional Realtor will walk you through most, if not all, of the steps mentioned in this home buyer?s guide. There are two types of real estate agents: a ?buyer?s agent? and a ?listing agent.? When buying a home ? which is what we are addressing in this post ? you?ll be interviewing a ?buyer?s real estate agent.? If you were selling your home, you would be interviewing a ?listing real estate agent.?

The seller pays the commission to your buyer?s agent, so it costs you nothing to hire a real estate agent. Your real estate agent serves you by informing you of houses, townhouses & condos available that meet your needs (realtors have access to their local MLS real estate database) and by answering your questions about the buying process. In theory, your real estate agent should negotiate on your behalf and successfully secure the best price possible.

#4 Tell Your Realtor Where You Would Like To Buy A House:

Discuss with your real estate agent what part of town you would like to live in, specific school district, certain neighborhood, the exact amount of your pre-approval letter, and how much you are willing to spend on your new home. Once your Realtor has this important information, he/she can start to research homes for sale that match your specific criteria. Once your real estate agent has found two or three homes he/she feels you may be interested in, they will coordinate with your schedule and set a time to show you the houses.

#5 Once You Find A House, Secure A Property Disclosure From The Sellers:

A property disclosure form outlines specific problems (issues) with the house that the seller knows about and is mandated by law to disclose to all future buyers. If you are satisfied with what you see in the property disclosure form, you can move on to the next step in the buying process.

#6 You?ll Contractually Submit An Offer On The House:

Now that you?ve just submitted an offer on your desired home, hopefully the seller will accept all terms. If not, you will likely see a counter offer. If the seller returns a counter offer, your real estate agent will present this to you and from there you can either decide to stop negotiations and continue to search for a different house, counter the counter offer, accept the counter offer with conditions, or accept the counter offer as is and move on to the next step in the buying process.

#7 Order A Complete Home Inspection:

Now that you and the seller have contractually agreed on a price, it?s time to order a complete home inspection by a certified home inspector. Generally, the home inspection is paid for by you, the buyer. Certified Home Inspectors charge anywhere from $350 to $500 depending on the size of the home. You?re probably asking yourself, ?why would I need a home inspection when I have a signed property disclosure form?? A home inspection may turn up problems with the house that the current homeowner (seller) wasn?t even aware of and isn?t listed on the property disclosure form. If the home inspection turns up problems not listed in the property disclosure form, you can request that the seller cover the cost to fix the problems, lower the price of the house, or simply walk away from the deal if the contract allows for that option.

#8 Your Lender Will Have The House Appraised:

Your lender (bank) will have the house appraised by a certified real estate appraiser to ensure the house is worth what you?re paying for it. The bank will not approve a home loan for $150,000 when the house is only worth $110,000. For the most part, you (the buyer) will have to pay for the appraisal up front, otherwise the cost of the appraisal will be calculated into your closing cost. Besides paying for the cost of the appraisal, you have nothing to do with this part of the buying process.

#9 Closing On Your New Home:

You are now ready for the final step in the buying process: attending the closing. Generally, the closing is held at either a real estate office, title company, or the lenders location. The closing table is where you will fill out the final paperwork and pay closing costs (down payment), unless the costs were rolled into the mortgage. If the costs were not rolled into the mortgage, you will either have to bring a certified money order or have your bank wire the funds to the closing company. Bright Venus to show in daytime sky

Effulgent Venus will show just beside the moon today. Also, some cues on how to observe this rare and beautiful event.

The planet Venus has been dominating the nighttime sky recently, but did you know it's possible to see the bright world in the daytime? Today (March 26), Venus can be spotted in the afternoon if you know where and when to look.

In fact, a daytime apparition of Venus in the sky was famously spotted by none other than President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

It was March 4, 1865, and the streets of Washington DC were packed with crowds watching the inauguration of?Abraham Lincoln for his second term as president. Suddenly someone in the crowd spotted something strange in the sky: a tiny brilliant point of light. Excitement swelled through the crowd as each person pointed it out to their neighbor. The commotion even reached as far as the Lincoln himself, and soon he too was pointing at the brilliant point in the sky.

One of Lincoln's bodyguards, Sergeant Smith Stimmellater, described it this way: "Soon after the President concluded his address, he entered his carriage, and the procession started up Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House, the escort from our Company following next to his carriage. Shortly after we turned onto Pennsylvania Avenue, west of the Capitol, I noticed the crowd along the street looking intently, and some were pointing to something in the heavens toward the south.?[Great Skywatcher Photos of Venus and Jupiter]

"I glanced up in that direction, and there in plain view, shining out in all her star-like beauty, was the planet Venus. It was a little after midday at the time I saw it, possibly near one o'clock; the sun seemed to be a little west of the median, the star a little east. It was a strange sight. I never saw a star at that time in the day before or since. The superstitious had had many strange notions about it, but of course it was simply owing to the peculiarly clear condition of the atmosphere and the favorable position of the planet at that time. The President and those who were with him in the carriage noticed the star at the same time."

This week, nearly a century and a half later, you can duplicate this famous observation. The sky map of Venus in daylight for this story shows where Venus and the moon will appear at 4 p.m. relative to the sun.

Venus is quite easy to see in a clear blue daylight sky, if you know exactly where to look, and if?you can focus your eyes on it. What makes today's Venus appearance special is that the waxing crescent moon will be right next to Venus in the sky, showing you exactly where to look, and giving your eyes something to focus on.

Here's how to see it:

Go out around 4 p.m. local time on Monday, and position yourself so that the sun is behind a chimney or rooftop to your right. Blocking the sun is always essential if you're looking anywhere close to the sun. WARNING:?Never look?directly at the?sun?with your unaided eye or through binoculars or telescopes without special light filters. Severe eye damage can result.

Then face due south, and look two-thirds of the way up the sky towards overhead. If the sky is clear, you should be able to clearly see the crescent moon. Look just above the moon, and you should be able to see Venus as a tiny brilliant pinpoint of light.

If you have difficulty, try using binoculars to focus on the moon. Before using binoculars, make doubly sure that the sun is still safely behind the chimney or rooftop. Always take extreme care when using binoculars in a daytime sky and never point them at the sun without using a solar filter.

Venus is not the only object currently shining bright in the evening and nighttime sky. Tonight, Venus will appear near the moon and Jupiter for the second night in a row in an event that astronomers call a conjunction.?

At sunset tonight, Venus will appear in the west just to the right of the crescent moon with Jupiter shining below. In the eastern night sky, Mars is also currently visible at night and is unmistakeable due to its reddish hue.

Powerhouse in the Crab Nebula: MAGIC telescopes observe pulsar at highest energies yet and strongly challenge current theories

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? The pulsar at the centre of the famous Crab Nebula is a veritable bundle of energy. This was now confirmed by the two MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-Ray Imaging Cherenkov) Telescopes on the Canary island of La Palma. They observed the pulsar in the area of very high energy gamma radiation from 25 up to 400 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), a region that was previously difficult to access with high energy instruments, and discovered that it actually emits pulses with the maximum energy of up to 400 GeV -- 50 to 100 times higher than theorists thought possible.

These latest observations are difficult for astrophysicists to explain. "There must be processes behind this that are as yet unknown," says Razmik Mirzoyan, project head at the Max Planck Institute of Physics.

The neutron star in the Crab Nebula is one of the best known pulsars. It rotates around its own axis 30 times every second and has a magnetic field of 100 million Tesla, over a trillion times stronger than that of Earth. The pulsar powers the surrounding famous Crab Nebula, located about 6000 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Taurus. Both the pulsar and the nebula are remnants of a supernova which exploded in July 1054 AD and was visible to the naked eye even by daylight for 23 days.

Neutron stars are extremely dense spheres made of nuclear material. Their mass is similar to that of the sun, but they have diameters of just 20 kilometres. But what makes a neutron star a pulsar, of which astrophysicists have detected some 2000 in our Milky Way galaxy? Neutron stars have an extremely regular and very short rotation period or "day," ranging from one millisecond to ten seconds. While rotating, the star constantly emits charged particles, mainly electrons and positrons (positively charged electrons) and electromagnetic radiation.

These particles move along magnetic field lines that rotate at the same speed as the neutron star itself, giving off beams almost everywhere in the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio wavelengths to gamma rays. If one of these beams crosses our line of sight, the star flashes up for a moment, just like the signal from a lighthouse.

A few years ago, the MAGIC telescopes detected gamma rays of energy ? 25 GeV from the Crab Pulsar. This was very unexpected since the available EGRET satellite data were showing that the spectrum ceases at much lower energies. However, at the very high energies MAGIC demonstrated to have few orders of magnitudes higher sensitivity compared to the satellite missions. At the time, scientists concluded that the radiation must have been produced at least 60 kilometres above the surface of the neutron star. This is because the high-energy gamma rays are so effectively shielded by the star's magnetic field that a source very close to the star could not be detected. As a consequence that measurement ruled out one of the main theories on high energy gamma-ray emission from the Crab pulsar.

Now the data measured by MAGIC over the course of the past two years show that the pulsed emissions by far exceed all expectations, reaching 400 GeV in extremely short pulses of about a millisecond duration.

The recent measurements by MAGIC, together with those of the orbiting Fermi satellite at much lower energies, provide an uninterrupted spectrum of the pulses from 0.1 GeV to 400 GeV. These clear observational results create major difficulties for most of the existing pulsar theories that predict significantly lower limits for highest energy emission.

A new theoretical model developed by MAGIC team associate Kouichi Hirotani of of the Academia Sinica, Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taiwan explains the phenomenon with a cascade-like process which produces secondary particles that are able to overcome the barrier of the pulsar's magnetosphere. Another possible explanation posed by Felix Aharonian of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and other researchers links the puzzling emission to the similarly enigmatic physics of the pulsar wind -- a current of electrons, positrons and electromagnetic radiation which ultimately develops into the Crab Nebula.

However, even though the above models are able to provide explanations for the extremely high energy and the shortness of the pulses, further refinements are necessary for achieving a good agreement with observations. Astrophysicists hope that future observations will improve the statistical precision of the data and help solving the mystery. This could shed new light on pulsars and on the Crab Nebula itself, as one of the most studied objects in our Milky Way.
