Take A Look At These Hair Loss Tips! - Health and Fitness Articles

It can be hard to deal with losing your hair, but hope abounds with new designs in wigs, as well as evolving technologies that may offer some new options for you to consider. Perhaps you have overlooked an easy solution. Hair loss is not necessarily permanent! You will get some guidance from the tips in this article.

Minimize exposure to harmful toxins or pollutants in order to help keep your hair luscious and beautiful. Toxic materials in the body reduce general health, which in turn increases the risk of thinning or missing hair. For example, avoid breathing car exhaust fumes when in traffic and always wear gloves if you handle toxic chemicals so that they aren?t absorbed through your skin.

Take the time to research a variety of hair loss methods, so that you understand what the ingredients they contain do. Your research may reveal that sometimes spending a little bit more on certain products is worth it.

Use caution when using a hair treatment. Make sure it doesn?t get on your clothes or bedding and ruin them. Let the product dry before you expect your head to contact any of those items.

Start considering the list of positives with regard to your hair loss. There are a few benefits you may actually enjoy. You don?t have to fret about combing or styling your hair. The time you save in the mornings can be considered a benefit.

If you have hair loss that has come about suddenly, think about any stressful or traumatic events you may have had recently. Take action to reduce your stress level at home and at work. Find a way to relax and take the time to do things you enjoy, and you may find that this stops your hair loss.

Vitamin B12 is available in many supplement forms, and is also contained in meats such as chicken and beef. Vitamin B12 is found in meat and poultry. If you are vegetarian or don?t want to increase your meat intake, you can try supplement pills.

Many of them only work on certain kinds of hair loss and others have little evidence that they work at all. They may work, but you may also waste time and money.

Hair loss can also be caused by many temporary conditions, like anemia, stress, surgery, sickness and changes in weight. These short term hair losses usually occur around twelve weeks after the initiating event has transpired, and then lasts another twelve weeks itself before hair starts growing back. You should understand these concerns, and utilize them for your benefit.

Of course, you will never be happy about your hair loss. However, there are many different ways to treat your hair loss and raise your self-esteem. You need to remember that hair loss doesn?t have to be permanent. You may be one of those with a situation like that. Apply this article?s advice and tailor it to your individual needs! With lucky, a simple solution to your personal circumstances exists!

Piracy Is Killing Our Business-John Mensah | Ghanamma.com

|

John Mensah Sarpong

PRESIDENT OF the National Society of Ghana Music Producers (NASGAMP,) John Mensah Sarpong, has revealed pathetically that the perennial piracy problem is still collapsing the music industry in the country.

He disclosed that the piracy menace had reduced the average one million copies of CD sales in a year by music producers of his calibre to just 50,000 in recent times, fearing for the worse.

In an exclusive chat with BEATWAVES in Kumasi, the NASGAMP President asked for stringent collaborative efforts between his outfit and the security agencies to help curb the piracy menace.

He bemoaned that the security agents were not doing enough in the fight against piracy, adding that piracy was on the increase because of lack of education about the act among the people.

The occasion was a one-day sensitization workshop in Kumasi under the theme ?Advocacy for the Enforcement of the Copyright Law to protect the rights of musicians and music producers in Ghana,? and was organized by NASGAMP.

Carlos Sakyi, president, Ghana Music Rights Organization, in his succinct remarks, described pirates as thieves and called for effective and rapid legal system in the country to deal with offenders.

He wept over the influx of foreign pirated music in the country which was sold on the market at cheap prices, thereby, killing the Ghana music industry in the process, asking ?where do these foreign pirated music CDs pass before getting into the market??

Mr. Sakyi said copyright gave the musician and producers control and power over their music, but he was quick to state that more was needed to be done in order to effectively battle the piracy menace.

The workshop was to update the participants including musicians, music producers, film producers, actors and actresses on their roles and responsibilities to ensure effective enforcement of the Copyright Law in Ghana.

Ambrose Yenah, CEO AIDEC Consultancies International Limited, a consultancy firm in Accra, on his part, challenged the NASGAMP to collaborate with the National Communication Authority to come out with a mechanism to track down those who downloaded music and films on the internet.

He observed that the various splinter groups in the music industry did not augur well for the promotion of music and creative arts in the country, admonishing key players in the industry to unite with a common voice to drum home their grievance.

OCTOBER 26, 2012 WHAT HAPPENED TO FAMILY BOARD GAMES

?Whatever the struggle, continue the climb. It may be only one step to the summit.? - Diane Westlake

Then I received from our son, " Sometimes, struggles are exactly what we need in life. If we were to go through our life without any obstacles, we would be crippled. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. Give every opportunity a chance, leave no room for regrets. "

I needed to hear this. Thank you, Gregory Patrick

Gaming had always been a form of family entertainment long before the invention of home computers and video game consoles. One type of game played for thousands of years is board games-especially throughout the 20th century. Unfortunately with technology, not many families still play board games. We tried to introduce Board Games to the children when they were growing up. One was Trivial Pursuit and the other was Scrabble. We did play Monopoly but not too often. As technology got fancier, and children got phones- the board games were less and less. This saddens me. Whatever happened to 'stick ball' , Hide and Seek, or Football Tackle. There are Board Games that have stood the test of time . Numerous board games have been created for the entire family to play. Children as young as six years old are have been able to play some of these timeless board games.

Monopoly is one of the most classic of board games created in the early 1900s. Several updated versions of it have been created since Parker Brothers first produced it in 1935. The most recent version of it created is the 70th Anniversary Monopoly Here and Now Electronic Banking Edition. The object of Monopoly is for one player to use both luck (roll of the dice) and strategy (careful financial investment) to become the most economically superior power. This action is achieved when the winning player is able to gain control over the most personal properties, utility companies, and financial opportunities. The game ends when one or more players go bankrupt. The history of Monopoly can be traced back to 1903, when an American woman named Elizabeth (Lizzie) J. Magie Phillips created a game through which she hoped to be able to explain the single tax theory of Henry George (it was intended to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies). Her game, The Landlord's Game, was commercially published in 1923. A series of variant board games based on her concept were developed from 1906 through the 1930s that involved the buying and selling of land and the development of that land. By 1934,?the board ?game? was called Monopoly.

This game? RISK, was created by Albert Lamorisse, and originally marketed in France under the name La Conqu?te du Monde (The Conquest of the World) in 1957. Risk was also published by Parker Brothers in 1959. The original game board of Risk is a map divided into 42 territories grouped on six continents, similar to the way the world was divided during the time Napoleon was alive. The object of this game is to conquer the world by way of opponent player elimination. I was a fan of RISK. I rather play Battleship.

Scrabble is one of the most well-known letter crossword games. Earlier versions of it were created in the early 1930s, and then the name Scrabble was trademarked in 1948. This is by far, the game I enjoy the most next to Trivial Pursuit. I love words. This game finally became a success after Alfred Mosher Butts and James Brunot joined forces. By 1952 Scrabble had been licensed to Selchow & Righter Company.
The main goal in Scrabble is to be the last person to be able to form words with remaining letter tiles. Points are given for every word formed, and the player with the most points wins the game.

This game, Trivial Pursuit ?was first co-invented in 1979 by Scott Abbot and Chris Hanley in Canada. It showed up at a U.S. toy fair in 1982, and the game rights were sold to Parker Brothers in 1984. The main object of the game is to answer the most trivia points correctly, and to advance to the end of the game board There are many versions now. I enjoyed getting those colored Pies. ? The games I remember vividly as a child in addition to monopoly were the following: ? The board game Chutes and Ladders were invented in 1943. The Game of Life, also known simply as LIFE, is a board game originally created in 1860 by Milton Bradley, as The Checkered Game of Life (and later produced by the Milton Bradley Company of Springfield, Massachusetts. Trouble" was invented by Kohner brothers in 1963. It was launched across the United States 14 months later in 1965
I want to do something this weekend that? requires no thought. It will require entering my 'craft closet' and fumbling on the top shelf for a jigsaw puzzle. I then have to make the decision for which one- honeybees, herbal or Dali . John Spilsbury invented the jigsaw puzzle in 1767. Spilsbury was an engraver and mapmaker. The first jigsaw puzzle was a map of the world. Paint by numbers was invented in 1950 by Dan Robbins who was employed by the Palmer Paint Company

What will you do this weekend ?

Clearer picture of how assassin bugs evolved: Entomologists reconstruct the evolutionary history

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Assassin bugs, so named because these insects lie in ambush for prey that they attack with speed and precision, are found all over the world. Nearly 140 species of these bugs are blood-sucking; because they can bite humans around the mouth, they are also called kissing bugs. All kissing bugs can spread Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that imposes an economic burden on society.

Surprising, then, that scientists' understanding of the evolutionary history of assassin bugs is riddled with difficulty. The data are incomplete. Fossils, which exist for only a few groups of assassin bugs, are young, providing only patchy information on how these bugs evolved.

Now entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have produced a clearer snapshot of the entire evolutionary history of assassin bugs by integrating molecular, paleontological, behavioral and ecological data into their analyses. The result of their painstaking work is a new phylogeny -- the representation of the evolutionary relationships between species -- for assassin bugs. It includes the most number of assassin bugs to date and represents the most number of subfamilies.

"We can now zoom in on specific groups within the phylogeny to examine specific aspects of the evolution of that group," said Christiane Weirauch, an associate professor of entomology who reconstructed the assassin bug phylogeny with her Ph.D. graduate student Wei Song Hwang. "Our phylogeny significantly improves our knowledge about relationships within assassin bugs and will guide future research work in understanding how some of the interesting prey specialization behaviors and prey capture techniques have evolved."

Study results appeared last month in PLoS ONE.

"One significant improvement is the addition of several assassin bug species from the subfamily Reduviinae, the second largest subfamily of assassin bugs," said Hwang, the first author of the research paper. "Previous phylogenies have a very limited representation of Reduviinae, which means the overall interpretation of the phylogeny is of limited value."

Assassin bugs are estimated to have originated during the Middle Jurassic (~178 million years ago), making them a relatively old group of insects. They diversified significantly in the Late Cretaceous (~97 million years ago); indeed, nearly 90 percent of the existing species diversity we see today in assassin bugs started to diversify from this time onwards. The cause of this diversification remains unknown.

Blood-feeding kissing bugs

Weirauch and Hwang also determined that kissing bugs originated just 27-32 million years ago, the previous estimate being 107 million years ago. Mostly found in Central and South America, these bugs have evolved to feed on vertebrate blood -- lizards, birds, opossums, armadillos, bats, etc., and humans -- and can be found in diverse environments, from the Sonoran desert to the Amazon rainforest.

"The previous estimate of 107 million years ago linked the diversification of kissing bugs with the splitting of South America from Antarctica and provided a longer time-span for kissing bugs to speciate and spread across the continent and adapt," Hwang said. "Our research shows that this is not the case. By including more data and improving estimation methods, our younger estimate of 27-32 million years ago matches the time when the hosts, mainly mammals and birds, were diversifying at a rapid rate in South America."

The researchers caution that as natural environments get altered, more kissing bugs may be seen adapting to new environments and hosts rather than going extinct.

"The colonization of human settlements by wild kissing bugs we are witnessing now is thus likely to increase in intensity as more natural environments are replaced by human activities," Hwang said.

With their comprehensive sampling of assassin bugs and large molecular dataset, Weirauch and Hwang also show that the blood-feeding kissing bugs either have a single origin or two separate but close origins. Until now, the possibility of two separate but close origins of kissing bugs had not been hypothesized nor demonstrated.

"The possibility that there are two separate lineages implies that there will be shared traits among the lineages, but also slight differences we need to be aware of when developing different preventative strategies," Hwang explained. "A single origin, on the other hand, means we can expect common traits shared among all kissing bugs that can be targeted for control or monitoring."

Building the Tree of Life

The current research is part of the scientific endeavor to reconstruct the entire Tree of Life -- the biological concept that all living organisms are related and can be traced back to a single ancestor representing the origin of life on Earth.

"Reconstructing a phylogeny, a framework from which we can infer the evolutionary history of any group of organisms, is thus the first step towards understanding how life evolved, how different species relate to one another, how specific traits evolved over time, and why biodiversity occurs the way it does today," Weirauch said.

The study was financially supported by the Partnership for Enhancing Expertise in Taxonomy (PEET) program of the National Science Foundation, the UCR Department of Entomology, a UCR Graduate Division Dissertation Year Program Award and an American Museum of Natural History Collection Study Grant.

Report: NJ third-highest in-state tuition costs

The cost of higher education continues to grow.

The College Board says the sticker price of in-state tuition at four-year public universities climbed an average of roughly $400 this fall to $8,655, an increase of nearly 5 percent. The report largely blames state cuts for rising tuition. Add on room-and-board charges and the full cost for students living on campus rose nationally to $17,860.

New Jersey has the third-highest published in-state tuition charges, at more than $12,000. New Hampshire topped the list at more than $14,000 while Wyoming was on the low end at less than $4,300.

Report co-author Sandy Baum says higher education is devouring an ever-increasing share of family income, but the numbers could also signal that unsustainable trends in costs, borrowing and aid are at last beginning to break.

How Setting Goals Makes you a Better Person (even if you never set ...

?What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.? ~ Zig Ziglar

Are you a goal-setting flunky? A New Years Resolution drop-out? Have you set goals time and time again only to summarily fail to reach them? All of them?

Well, the good news is that you didn?t waist your time trying. You even likely improved your life, becoming a subtly better person, perhaps without even realizing it ? even if you?ve never quite reached a single goal you?ve ever set.

The value of setting goals has been well documented. We simply achieve better results when we set goals and work to achieve them than when we don?t. We experience measurable improvements as energy and resources are directed and concentrated on a desired end.

But I contend here that there is another reason to set goals that reaches far beyond the thing we set the goal to attain. And the reason has nothing to do with the specific goal being set.

The very act of setting and pursuing goals can actually make you a better human being.

Now let?s be clear. I?m not talking about setting goals to become a better person. I?m talking about becoming a better person because you set goals and work to achieve them. Any goals. To do anything. Related to being a better person or not.

How? Well, read on! The ?how? is the rest of this article.

When taken seriously, goals provide a context and a process that can help us develop an impressive array of character traits and other personal characteristics that can lead us to living better lives.

For Example ?

Let?s suppose, for instance, I set a goal to lose 20 pounds by November 15th. But I only lose 10 by the given date. Fail, right? I missed my goal. I fell short and 50% of anything is a big fat ?F?. A dismal, abject failure!

But wait a minute. Let?s look a bit closer. What exactly happened during my supposed failed attempt?

I resisted eating as much junk food as I normally would have. I pushed myself to get to the gym (or track or field or court or pool) more often than I otherwise would have. I exercised through discomfort and pain. I pulled myself from the TV and frequently took my family with me on walks. I aimed at a target. I eliminated (or reduced) distractions. I kept at it (even if not reaching the specified goal). And in the failed attempt to reach the desired weight, I was taught some valuable lessons about myself.

Failure? All that? No way! Perhaps I failed at reaching my specific goal. But I succeeded wonderfully at living life. Healthier. Happier. Better. In other words, the effort did not go wasted.

And even if you never reach any given goal, your life will be all the better for having tried. So no need to beat yourself up anymore when a deadline for a goal passes and you find yourself somewhere south of the hoped-for results.

As we set goals and begin the process of chasing them down, stumbling, wrestling back up, pursuing, trying, reaching and stretching, something happens inside of us. Qualities are exercised. Personal characteristics are tightened up. Character begins to grow, just a little bit at a time, over time, as we continue the effort to achieve something we were willing to sacrifice for.

Life is a ready schoolmaster. Setting and pursuing specific goals with specified timelines has a way of intensifying the lessons life means to teach us. Here are 10 of those lessons we would all do well to learn ?

1. Delayed Gratification

?The ability to discipline yourself to delay gratification in the short term in order to enjoy greater rewards in the long term is the indispensable pre-requisite for success? ~ Brian Tracy

By working toward a goal, we learn to put off what we want to do now for something more important later. That ability to delay gratification will pay off huge dividends in personal power and achievement and happiness in the future.

One study conducted with 3-5 year old toddlers demonstrated that those who could delay eating one marshmallow for two later were also more likely to get good grades in school, go to college, stay off drugs and out of jail and lead successful lives than their more immediately gratifying counterparts.

When we can delay immediate gratification, we can push the desire to lie or cheat or steal for personal gain off for the larger rewards of self-respect, human decency, and living up to a set of moral standards. We can delay the reward of junk food and partying for future rewards of better health and a more rewarding career. With greater self-control comes greater opportunities for happiness as well.

2. Commitment

?Once a man has made a commitment to a way of life, he puts the greatest strength in the world behind him. It?s something we call heart power. Once a man has made this commitment, nothing will stop him short of success.? ~ Vince Lombardi

Reaching goals requires committing to an imagined end. Without the ability to commit to a goal, to focus concentration and energy to the completion of a long-term pursuit, we flounder and become distracted and fail to see the goal come to fruition.

But learning to commit to our goals works our commitment muscles. That same commitment (now stronger than before) can then be applied to other areas of life, such as committing to a marriage as you whether storms and uphill climbs over tough emotional terrain that is often part of the marital journey. We become better, more committed parents, friends, or club and church members.

We are also better able to commit to a set of moral standards. The skills, thinking, determination and passion it requires to commit to your goals can be carried over into the rest of your life as well.

It?s not that developing our ability to commit to something guarantees we will also commit to our marriages, children, friends and churches. But the commitment muscles will be in better shape to be used wherever our values apply them nonetheless.

3. Hard Work

?Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.? ~ Henry Ford

Those who reach difficult goals are those who work hard to achieve them. Whether we?re talking about Olympians or entrepreneurial success or losing 5 pounds, those who reach for their goals learn to work hard to attain them.

Life also requires work. Loving families do as well. Developing talents do. Raising moral children do. Overcoming weaknesses and living a deeply meaningful and happy life do.

4. Self-Discipline

?If you fail to plan, you plan to fail? ~ Harvey MacKay

Goal setting requires planning. We plan out our futures. We plan the steps it takes to get there. We plan the monthly, weekly then daily tasks required to reach our longer-termed goals.

Planning in all parts of life improves the likelihood of achieving something that looks like what we hoped life would be like. Few great achievements were accomplished accidentally. (<? Tweet this!)

But here?s the thing: Sticking to a plan requires self-discipline.

Planning to live an ethical life, planning happiness into life, planning on marital and parental success increases the likelihood of living happier and more ethical lives.

5. Prioritization

?Don?t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.? ~ John D. Rockefeller

Goal setting by definition means we?re choosing something over other things. Life is all about priorities, trade-offs and opportunity costs. So learning this characteristic will serve you well no matter your circumstances.

You will come to recognize the value of time and begin to use yours better. You will lose less time on the trivial and inconsequential and start spending more time doing those things that truly matter. Life will have more meaning and you?ll have more happiness more often because you will have identified those things that matter most to you and will have allocated enough time to their pursuits.

6. Focus

?Don?t dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next.? ~ Denis Waitley

Concentrated effort. Steely-eyed determination. Clarity of vision and purpose are ways the top achievers have accomplished the amazing things they?ve accomplished. That ability is important when we work to finish anything we do.

The more focused we are, the more productive and effective we?ll be. The likelihood of finding joy in your work also increases as it requires extended focus to reach what performance experts call flow.

The intensity of a dream is measured by the sweat expended on its pursuit. (<? Tweet this!)

?Champions aren?t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them ? a desire, a dream, a vision.? ~ Mohammad Ali

Setting and working toward goals helps nurture our desires, dreams and visions. It inspires us to reach for the possible. It unleashes our potential and momentum and ability. It harnesses our creativity and energy and passion and drives us to a single point.

7. Humility

?Humility is the only true wisdom by which we prepare our minds for all the possible changes of life.? ~ George Arliss

Those who have spent much of their lives setting goals will attest to the fact that we often fail to achieve them within the given time frame allotted.

While not all people who fall short of their goals learn humility, that lesson is certainly there to be had. I know students, for example, who drift off as teachers instruct. There are also many of us who drift off as life instructs. That?s to be expected, even though self-defeating.

But the lesson of humility can remind us to depend on a Higher Source and to recognize our interdependency. It peels back the pride to reveal someone open to being instructed, taught and schooled in life.

8. Adaptability

?Take the best out of everything and adapt it to your needs.? ~ Sam Walton

As we set goals and work towards achieving them, it doesn?t take long before we realize there is a need to be flexible enough to adapt to changing circumstances.

Goals teach us to seek the best advice from wherever we can get it and adapt it to our circumstances, grow, innovate and improve.

9. Perseverance

?I had to get up everyday with my mind set on improving something.? ~ Sam Walton

If you?re a goal-setter, you know that most of our big goals are reached by taking regular little steps. Our whole lives, for that matter, are comprised of smaller days and hours and events. Castles are built one brick at a time. So is happiness. And moral lives of character and decency.

?I hated every minute of training, but I said, ?Don?t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.? ~ Muhammad Ali

The world needs more moral champions as well. Goal setting can take us closer to that end as we develop those characteristics that moral champions champion.

10. Cause and Effect

All of life is about cause and effect. If we are caught in the rut of self-defeat, there are reasons why. The feeling of being stuck is the effect of other causes.

Happiness is the effect of specific causes too, such as gratitude, optimism and finding meaning and purpose to life. Moral behavior is governed by cause and effect as well.

So are goals.

So are lives.

As we come to recognize the causes that produce the desired effects in our lives, we will be better empowered to change the nature of the causes to effect changes in the conditions of our lives, in all areas and compartments of life.

There are plenty of people running around this world of ours who are addicted goal setters and whose character is left wanting. Why? Because people can be quite tunnel visioned.

History is packed with high achieving goal-setters who were crummy people. They kept their character out of it. They delayed gratification, but only in certain things. They were focused, but to the exclusion of more important things. They set priorities, but often, to wrong things.

Obviously, there are also many people who are quite decent human beings of sound character who have never set a formal goal in their lives.

One doesn?t necessarily lead to the other.

But they can.

Goals are not set in a vacuum. As we strive to reach our goals, we change. We grow. We can become someone different than the person who started the pursuit.

That?s the power of goals. Yes, they can improve the likelihood of you getting what you aim at. But they can also change the person aiming.

Still, the tool is only as helpful as the person using it allows it to be.

As you set and pursue goals, watch how you change in the process. It may be more subtle than you would like. But permanent change and deep-rooted improvement tends to be that way anyway.

?

YOUR TURN!

  • How has goal setting made you a better person?
  • Or have they done the opposite?
  • I may have left some of the benefits out, so help me out and add a few of your own observations.

Does Microsoft's Surface tablet live up to the hype?

"Ma'am, we need you to take the laptop out of the bag," the TSA agent says as he hands me my backpack.

But I've already taken my laptop out of the bag. All that's left inside are an iPad and Microsoft's Surface tablet. He pulls out the Surface with its Touch Cover on top and says "It's a laptop, right? It needs to go through in its own bin." I pull the keyboard off the Surface and toss the two pieces -- tablet and keyboard -- into a bin.

Microsoft's Surface RT ($499) is a 10.6-inch tablet that runs Windows RT, a version of Windows 8. It is also more than a tablet when you pay an extra $100 and get the Touch Cover with a built-in keyboard that clicks onto the bottom of the tablet. Microsoft has spent millions of dollars and hours perfecting the Surface hardware and software so people will, well, replace both the iPad and the laptop in their carry-on bags.

WATCH: Microsoft Surface Video Review

Hardware Built to Fall

I don't worry about tossing ? and I mean really tossing -- the Surface into the bin. That's because a few days earlier I watched the tablet fall 30 feet onto the floor of Microsoft's testing lab. Constructed of VaporMg, a new material engineered by Microsoft, the tablet is built to withstand the toughest bumps and bruises. And it feels really durable when you hold it; there's no flex to the screen or the back casing. The screen itself is covered with durable Gorilla Glass, too.

And yet, despite the rough-and-tough build, the tablet is only 0.06 pounds heavier than the new iPad, and even then it has a full-sized USB port, mini-HDMI port, larger screen and built-in stand. According to the spec sheets, it's the same thickness as Apple's tablet, but the way the edges flare inward, it actually appears a bit thinner.

A Wide Screen With a Kick

The tablet is much taller than the iPad since Microsoft used a 10.6-inch screen to accommodate a wider keyboard and to provide more horizontal space for the software. iPad users will notice the difference instantly; when holding it horizontally, your hands are further apart and it's a wider tablet to manage. New iPad owners will also notice the difference in the display. While the display on the Surface appears to be just as bright and vibrant, its 1366 x 768 resolution screen doesn't always make for as crisp a picture as the iPad's Retina display.

Having become a master at creating a pillow stand for my iPad, I've been delighted with the kickstand that pops out of the Surface back. The metal stand lies flush with the tablet when it isn't in use, but when you extend it, it holds the tablet almost vertically. Unfortunately, you can't adjust the angle and it's harder than it should be to pull out the metal stand. (My manicure didn't appreciate it!) But whether it is propping the tablet up on a plane's tray table or in bed, it's an extremely handy feature.

Touch Typing

Both that wider screen and the kickstand help set the stage for the last important piece of hardware: the attachable keyboard covers. The Touch Cover is a lot like Apple's Smart Cover ? it uses strong magnets to latch onto the bottom of the tablet ? but there's a keyboard built into the seriously skinny 3mm cover. The keyboard is flush with the cover, but underneath it lies a thin layer of touch sensors. It creates an entirely new typing experience ? one that falls between typing on the glass of a tablet and a regular keyboard.

At first, typing on the tablet cover felt odd. It took me about two hours to get entirely comfortable but now, after a week's experience, I am able to type 75 words per minute. That's less than I type on a regular keyboard but about equal to my speed on some popular iPad keyboard covers. The magnets attaching the cover and the tablet are so strong that you can even hold the tablet upside down by just holding the cover.

There's also the Type Cover, which is similar to a traditional keyboard with physical keys. I can type faster -- 86 words per minute ? on the Type Cover but it isn't nearly as much fun to use as the Touch Cover. Both covers have small trackpads that are useful when navigating cramped menus in Office 2013. They supports two-finger scrolling, but not pinch-to-zoom.

The Touch Cover, which is available in a number of colors, flips over the tablet to make it appear like a book. Word to the wise: The white cover is a lot like white socks; it gets dirty easily, so expect to clean it often.

Windows 8 RT

The tablet's hardware is top-notch, but what about the software? The Surface runs a stripped-down version of Windows 8. Called Windows RT, it is designed for tablets with lower-powered ARM processors, like the ones that power smartphones and tablets. Unlike Windows 8 for Intel and AMD processors, you can only download apps through the Windows Store; no programs or apps through the Web browser. It comes loaded with Office 2013, which includes Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.

Otherwise, Window RT gives you all the other features of Window 8: the Start Screen, which consists of different live tiles or apps, the ability to lock apps side-by-side and swipe in apps from the left. While it includes a traditional Desktop screen, you can only run Office programs from it.

The Surface pushes Windows 8's general interface along smoothly, and the architecture lets it function like the iPad or smartphones. It boots up in under 30 seconds, resumes from sleep in under three seconds, and lasts nearly nine hours on a charge when playing video. (I got considerably less battery life when just using it to write and surf the web). This isn't like the PCs you have come to know; there's no time to get a cup of coffee as it boots or the need to drag a clunky charger everywhere.

However, the software can get sluggish, especially when you're opening apps or running more than a few of them or typing with Microsoft Word. Many times while typing this review on the tablet, I would input a series of words and the tablet would take a few seconds to catch up with my typing. The system can also get bogged down fairly easily, causing small graphical glitches. With the keyboard attached, you come to expect laptop performance of the Surface and it can't always keep up. (I haven't noticed these performance issues on any of the Intel-powered, Windows 8 Pro tablets or laptops I have been testing over the last few weeks.) Microsoft says there should be an update soon to address the issues.

Windows App Store

But even when the keyboard is detached, I found myself getting frustrated by something else -- the lack of applications available in the Windows Store. Now, Microsoft is promising many more apps on Windows 8 launch day (Oct. 26) but as of this writing the apps I use most frequently on my iPad-- including Facebook, Twitter, Flipboard, Yelp, and news apps -- were missing from the store. While there is a selection of games, there's no Words with Friends, Scramble with Friends, etc.

Yes, you can access the websites for many of those services through the browser, but those aren't very touch friendly, and when the keyboard is detached, you want a more finger-friendly experience. Over the past few weeks Microsoft has announced Skype, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Angry Birds and other key apps, but there's no saying when other big-name apps will come along. Also, remember that because you're unable to download other apps through the browser, you are limited to what is in the Store.

Bottom Line

The Surface isn't a laptop as the TSA agent thought, but it isn't a tablet either. It's a whole new category of computer, one of many coming out with Windows 8 this week. It has the potential to change how we use our devices ? to be a tablet to lean back with on the couch and a full computer when you click in the keyboard.

But only part of its potential is fully realized at this point, and that's the hardware -- ironic for Microsoft, a software company. Windows RT is new and it shows; there are still performance kinks and the disappointing app selection limits the tablet in its functionality, despite its full version of Microsoft Office. Other full Windows 8 tablets and computers, like Acer's W510 and even the Surface Pro coming in January, are more appealing at this point because of their full Windows 8 software.

The Surface is full of potential, but until its software performance and apps are as strong as its hardware, I, unfortunately, will still drag both a laptop and an iPad through security.

Cameleon ? What Can We Do For Business Marketing?

Business: Marketing

Is SEO about high ranking? Do you think if you rank higher than that is the best result? No if you ask me I rather higher number of visitors over high ranking. I believe SEO is about enhancing number of visitors and increase business leads generation. Ranking high is good but will not beat high visitor as visitor will be a potential customer. The perception is higher ranking will bring higher visitors and this is not true if you ask me. Why? Because the page title and page description may not be appealing enough to attract visitors to your site. Seo agency Australia will take this issue into consideration to produce a better result.

Experience is the main factor of any company. The experience should be of high ranking. For an SEO campaign to be a wild success, it must be planned correctly, be considered, and backed up with hard evidence such as traffic reports, relevance of keywords, and appropriate fit for the company running the campaign. In the initial stages, a search engine optimiser project must begin with a complete and comprehensive review of the client website, followed by a series of reports that will assist in developing the strategy to be taken, and then the first stages of actual SEO work will be all of the on-page SEO changes that are required.

Guarantee is the one thing that you kept in mind but this term is not professional, because the companies don?t have control over the ranking. They guarantee for their best work. The companies don?t have any control over the search engine algorithms. If the company is professional then they can give guarantee to no. of visitors or higher business lead. At last I prefer you the Australia?s best company Koala media as Sydney seo, a trustable company that provide you many more facilities of SEO, designing and development for your website.

A Tour of Astrobotic Technology's lunar rover lab at Carnegie Mellon (video)

Things are buzzing late Monday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon's Planetary Robotics Lab Highbay. Outside, in front of the garage door-like entrance, a trio of men fills up a kiddie pool with a garden hose. Just to their left, an Enterprise rent-a-truck backs up and a handful of students raise two metal ramps up to its rear in order to drive a flashy rover up inside. I ask our guide, Jason Calaiaro, what the vehicle's final destination is. "NASA," he answers, simply. "We have a great relationship with NASA, and they help us test things."

Calaiaro is the CIO of Astrobotic Technology, an offshoot of the school that was founded a few years back, thanks to Google's Lunar X Prize announcement. And while none of the handful of vehicles the former student showcases were made specifically with the government space agency in mind, given the company's history of contractual work, we could well see them receive the NASA stamp of approval in the future. Asked to take us through the project, Calaiaro tells us, quite confidently, that the trio of vehicles behind us are set to "land on the moon in 2015," an ambitious goal set to occur exactly three weeks from last Friday.

(AP) ? A Wisconsin man terrorized his wife for years, threatening to throw acid on her face, dousing her car with tomato juice and slashing her vehicle's tires before finally going to the spa where she worked, opening fire and killing her and two others.

The shooting spree stunned the middle- to upper-class Milwaukee suburb where it happened, but court records show the conflict between Radcliffe Haughton and his wife had been escalating for years.

The 45-year-old former car salesman ultimately shot seven women at the spa before turning the gun on himself. Three remained hospitalized Monday.

Haughton, of Brown Deer, was charged with disorderly conduct last year after police officers responding to a 911 call saw Haughton point what appeared to be a gun at his wife, Zina, from a window at their home. Officers took cover, and a 90-minute standoff ensued.

Brown Deer police said Monday the standoff ended peacefully, and they were never able to confirm a gun was involved because Zina Haughton wouldn't allow them into the couple's home. The charge against Radcliffe Haughton was dropped when a police officer failed to appear in court.

Police said the officer asked the prosecutor to reschedule, but the prosecutor refused. A call to the prosecutor Monday evening rang unanswered.

According to court records, Zina Haughton told police when she called 911 that her husband had thrown her clothes and bedding into the yard and poured tomato juice on her car.

Ernest J. Polk, who lives across the street from the Haughtons' home, said they were friendly to him but he saw signs of turmoil.

"There was always confrontation over there, but I never thought it would come to this," he said. "... It was mostly verbal. I didn't see anything physical."

Zina Haughton told police last year that her husband didn't own any guns, but she was concerned enough about her safety to get a police escort when she went to the house earlier this month to pick up a few items.

Zina Haughton wrote in restraining order request filed Oct. 8 that her husband had threatened to kill her if she ever left him. He also, at various times, threatened to throw acid on her face and burn her and her family with gas.

"His threats terrorize my every waking moment," Zina Haughton wrote.

She said when she drove to work after picking up items from her home, she found her husband waiting for her in a car outside the spa. He leaned out of the vehicle and, in front of her and two co-workers, slashed her vehicle's tires. He was later arrested.

Radcliffe Haughton appeared in court Thursday, when a judge issued a four-year restraining order and told him to turn in all firearms to a county sheriff. It's not clear whether he turned in any weapons.

He bought the .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun used in the shootings on Saturday, Brown Deer police said in a statement.

People who buy handguns from gun dealers must wait 48 hours after they have cleared a background check from the Department of Justice to pick up their firearm. There is no such waiting period or background check required in Wisconsin for people who purchase handguns from private individuals, which police say Radcliffe Haughton did.

Two Democratic state lawmakers said Monday that they'll re-introduce a bill designed to ensure that perpetrators of domestic violence comply with judges' orders to surrender their weapons.

The shooting spree also killed Cary Robuck, a 35-year-old nail technician from Racine, and Maelyn Lind, 38, of Oconomowoc.

Shawn Scheffler, who had lived with Robuck for six years, described her as a "bright personality" who loved her part-time job at the spa.

"She was my world," Scheffler said. "That was the woman I was going to spend the rest of my life with, and she was taken from me just like that."

Kathy Sieja, a spokeswoman at the hospital where the survivors were taken, said one woman was released from the hospital Monday afternoon and the others were in satisfactory condition.

The shooting spree that happened about 11 a.m. Sunday triggered chaos in the commercial area around the spa. Believing Haughton had fled, police began a massive, six-hour search that locked down a nearby mall, country club and hospital.

The police chief in Brookfield, where the spa is located, said later that a fire Haughton set in the building, the discovery of a propane tank initially believed to be an improvised explosive device and the layout of the facility, with many small rooms and locked areas, all slowed officers' search and delayed the discovery of the gunman's body.

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

Sunday's shooting took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

Morning-After Skin Cancer Treatment. Part 1 ? mettheatre.org

Outdoors all day without your sunscreen?

Fell asleep in the noonday sun?

You think there?s nothing you can do about it except hope the burn doesn?t touch off the process of skin cancer development, right? Think again.

For the forgetful or merely careless sunbather, a new product under development by a New York-based biopharmaceutical company could one day soon keep skin damage at bay ? even when the skin has already been burned and blistered by the sun?s powerful ultraviolet rays.

Dubbed the morning after skin cancer treatment, the drug known as T4N5 liposome lotion is topically applied to the skin once a day, following an episode of damaging sun exposure.? Its trade name is Dimericine.

Not Yet, Not Yet
Dimericine is presently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration only for the treatment of the hereditary skin disease known as xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a rare genetic disorder.? The lotion is not yet available for those who simply stay out in the sun too long, but its manufacturer ? AGI Dermatics, Inc, a private company in Freeport, New York ? is hoping for broader approval in the near future.

People with XP have been called children of the night because their bodies lack the ability to repair sun damage.? Typically many XP patients develop skin cancers very early in life unless they totally avoid sunlight.

A recent study of Dimericane presented at the May 2001 Photobiology session of the German Academy of Dermatology?s annual conference reported that the drug reduced the rate of skin cancer in some XP patients by 30% and reduced pre-cancerous skin changes by 68%, over and above the protection received from sunscreens. Daniel B. Yarosh, Ph.D., president of AGI Dermatics, explains, T4N5 liposome lotion supplements the missing enzyme in XP disease and reduces the rate at which cancers develop.

It Comes From the Ocean
T4N5 is manufactured from photolyase enzymes harvested from ocean-dwelling microbes known as Anacystis nidulans.? As these microbes float in the ocean, the photolyase absorbs visible light and helps them repair gene damage an essential task for an organism that spends its entire life cycle in the bright sunshine.

AGI Dermatics utilizes the pyotolayse to create a light-activated skin product by combining these enzymes with microscopic fat molecules. The company bills the product as the first product for skin enzyme replacement therapy.

Beirut braces for funeral of anti-Syrian official

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanese forces set up road blocks and cordoned off Beirut's central square Sunday, boosting security in the capital ahead of a public funeral for an assassinated intelligence official who was a powerful opponent of Syria.

The bombing on Friday killed Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan and seven others in an attack that many blame on Syria. Al-Hassan, 47, headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, a Lebanese politician who was one of Syria's most loyal allies in Lebanon.

Even before the bombing, the civil war in neighboring Syria had set off violence in Lebanon and deepened tensions between supporters and opponents of President Bashar Assad's regime. The attack heightened fears that Lebanon could easily plunge back into cycles of sectarian violence and reprisal that have haunted it for decades.

Dozens of anti-Syrian protesters erected eight tents near the Cabinet headquarters in central Beirut, saying they will stay until Prime Minister Najib Mikati's government, which is dominated by the Shiite militant group Hezbollah and its allies, resigns. Hezbollah is Syria's most powerful ally in Lebanon, which for much of the past 30 years has lived under Syrian military and political domination.

"The Syrian regime started a war against us and we will fight this battle until the end," said protester Anthony Labaki, a 24-year-old physiotherapist who is a member of the right-wing Phalange Party. He said the protesters will not leave the area until Mikati's government resigns and those behind al-Hassan's killing are uncovered.

Syria's hold on Lebanon began to slip in 2005, when former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, an opponent of Syria, was assassinated in truck bomb along Beirut's Mediterranean waterfront. Syria denied any role. But broad public outrage in Lebanon expressed in massive street protests forced Damascus to withdraw its tens of thousands of troops from the country.

For years after the pullouts, there was a string of attacks on anti-Syrian figures in Lebanon without any trials for those responsible. Assad has managed to maintain his influence in Lebanon through Hezbollah and other allies.

Samaha, the former minister arrested in al-Hassan's investigation, remains in custody. He is accused of plotting a wave of attacks in Lebanon at Syria's behest.

Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's most senior aides, was indicted in absentia in the August sweep that saw Samaha arrested. Samaha's arrest was an embarrassing blow to Syria, which has long acted with impunity in Lebanon.

The car bombing struck Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood and also wounded dozens of people, including children.

Al-Hassan will be buried in Beirut's Martyrs Square next to the late Hariri. Security was tight as thousands of people headed to the capital from around the country to attend the funeral.

Al-Hassan's body will first be taken to police headquarters for an official procession to the square.

Policemen and soldiers cordoned off the square, searching people trying to enter and barring vehicles. Giant posters of al-Hassan were set up around Beirut ahead of the funeral, calling him a "martyr of sovereignty and independence."

On Saturday, Mikati linked the bombing to the Samaha case.

"I don't want to prejudge the investigation, but in fact we cannot separate yesterday's crime from the revelation of the explosions that could have happened," he said.

Mikati, who opponents say is too close to Syria and Hezbollah, offered to resign after the bombing. But President Michel Suleiman asked him to stay so as not to add to the instability.

Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. Assad, like many who dominate his regime is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Al-Hassan was a Sunni who challenged Syria and Hezbollah.

From the Editor's Desk: The acts of children ...

Phil Nickinson

We're in the tall grass now, boys and girls. We're at that point in the year when Google's got a new Nexus coming down the pike, and the smartphone nerds are getting that annual tingling sensation not felt since puberty, or the release of the previous Nexus. All sanity and logic goes out the window, and drama ensues.

That, of course, brings us to the object of last week's infection, that painfully obvious fake "Sony Nexus X." Make no mistake, folks -- it was pretty clear from the start that it wasn't real. I said as much on Twitter before we published. Others were a bit stronger. Internally, we knew what we were looking at. I was done. But Alex likes to walk through this stuff, and he's got a good eye for debunking, so I gave him the green light. Could our post have been stronger? Perhaps. But I love that British sense of understatement. When our headline called the pictures "dubious," that's code for "utter shite." Make no mistake -- somebody was being polite.

I've never understood why folks throw out reason when it comes to new phones. Some call it "hypebeasting." I call it a pain in our collective asses. Fakes are nothing new, and they all have one thing in common: Frauds like these are perpetrated by feckless children, starved for attention. That's it. And in this case, it's twice as bad as you think. There's the attention the initial fraud receives, and then the added attention of when someone "comes clean," which is to say they own up to having lied, and we should all love them now for no longer lying. Someone should be rewarded for that? That's not what I teach my 6-year-old daughter, who's able to understand why that's wrong. I hate that I'm still talking about this, that I've given it the weight of this column.

But, frankly, I'm glad the kid who wasted his time with all this didn't even realize that we'd called bullshit, and that explained why. And I'm especially glad he didn't list us as his favorite Android site. An endorsement from a pathological liar is not an endorsement I want. I'm funny like that, I guess.

Good news, everyone! I've got happier thoughts ahead.

Firewood question - what would you do? - Family Woodworking

Thanks for all your replies. Well, so I called. I told him that his wood was somewhere between fair and poor, that it's covered in mold, and has large amounts that are rotten.
I'd estimate that about 35% of the wood is ok, and about 50% has spalting and about 15% is rotten.

He offered to come with his splitter and split the ones that are too big. I told him some of the wood is so lousy I can't even give it away, and that I want him to come and get it, and replace it with decent wood.

He disagreed with me that wood with fungus isn't ok. "It won't hurt you to burn it" he said. And that he could sell this stuff to 50 other people who wouldn't complain.
Well we left it that he'll split the big stuff and replace the bad stuff. We'll see if he keeps his word. I'm surely not going to buy from him again. Sad thing is, the guy is 20 years retired military, fairly new in the area, and trying to establish himself in business locally with plowing, firewood, lawnmowing, etc. A rep in his line is important, and he's ruining his with the quality of his product.

I'll post follow-up when I have some.

HBT: Barry Zito turns back the clock

10 years after winning a Cy Young Award for the A?s, six years after signing one of the worst contracts in major league history and two years after being left off the postseason roster for the World Series champions, Barry Zito finally came up big for the Giants on Friday.

With his team on the verge of elimination, Zito shut out the Cardinals for 7 2/3 innings in a 5-0 victory, sending the ALCS back to San Francisco for a Game 6 on Sunday.

It was actually the 13th straight start of Zito?s that the Giants have won, but tonight was easily the left-hander?s best outing during the run. He had a 4.04 ERA during the previous 12 starts and had pitched more than seven innings just once.

That surge left Zito with far and away his best win-loss record in six years with the Giants. At 15-8, it was his first season over .500 since 2006, his last year with Oakland. Still, his 4.15 ERA was no better than his marks from 2009 and 2010. He finished with the worst strikeout rate of his career, fanning just 114 batters in 184 1/3 innings. Six years into a seven-year, $126 million deal, he has a 58-69 record and a 4.47 ERA for the Giants.

For one night, though, it hardly matters. Zito?s win tonight was his first in a postseason game since the 2006 ALDS with the A?s. He was a fine postseason pitcher for Oakland, going 4-3 with a 3.25 ERA in seven starts, but the Giants had no need of him when they won the World Series in 2010, opting to ?leave him off the roster for all three series while they went with a rotation of Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez and Madison Bumgarner.

And if not for Bumgarner?s struggles in Game 1, Zito may never have gotten the call in this series, either. The Giants were lining up Lincecum for Game 4, and Bumgarner was initially supposed to pitch Game 5. It was Bumgarner?s 11.25 ERA in two postseason starts that led to the change of heart.

Now Zito is the hero, turning in the best start by a Giants hurler in 10 postseason games to date. If his teammates can help him out Sunday and Monday, then he?ll be lined up to start a World Series game for the first time in his career.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A new White House executive order would direct U.S. spy agencies to share the latest intelligence about cyberthreats with companies operating electric grids, water plants, railroads and other vital industries to help protect them from electronic attacks, according to a copy obtained by The Associated Press.

The seven-page draft order, which is being finalized, takes shape as the Obama administration expresses growing concern that Iran could be the first country to use cyberterrorism against the United States. The military is ready to retaliate if the U.S. is hit by cyberweapons, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. But the U.S. also is poorly prepared to prevent such an attack, which could damage or knock out critical services that are part of everyday life.

The White House declined to say when the president will sign the order.

The draft order would put the Department of Homeland Security in charge of organizing an information-sharing network that rapidly distributes sanitized summaries of top-secret intelligence reports about known cyberthreats that identify a specific target. With these warnings, known as tear lines, the owners and operators of essential U.S. businesses would be better able to block potential attackers from gaining access to their computer systems.

An organized, broad-based approach for sharing cyberthreat information gathered by the government is widely viewed as essential for any plan to protect U.S. computer networks from foreign nations, terrorist groups and hackers. Existing efforts to exchange information are narrowly focused on specific industries, such as the finance sector, and have had varying degrees of success.

Yet the order has generated stiff opposition from Republicans on Capitol Hill who view it as a unilateral move that bypasses the legislative authority held by Congress.

Administration officials said the order became necessary after Congress failed this summer to pass cybersecurity legislation, leaving critical infrastructure companies vulnerable to a serious and growing threat. Conflicting bills passed separately by the House and Senate included information-sharing provisions. But efforts to get a final measure through both chambers collapsed over the GOP's concerns that the Senate bill would expand the federal government's regulatory power and increase costs for businesses.

The White House has acknowledged that an order from the president, while legally binding, is not enough. Legislation is needed to make other changes to improve the country's digital defenses. An executive order, for example, cannot offer a company protection from liabilities that might result from a cyberattack on its systems.

The addition of the information-sharing provisions is the most significant change to an earlier draft of the order completed in late August. The new draft, which is not dated, retains a section that requires Homeland Security to identify the vital systems that, if hit by cyberattack, could "reasonably result in a debilitating impact" on national and economic security. Other sections establish a program to encourage companies to adopt voluntary security standards and direct federal agencies to determine whether existing cyber security regulations are adequate.

The draft order directs the department to work with the Pentagon, the National Security Agency, the director of national intelligence and the Justice Department to quickly establish the information-sharing mechanism. Selected employees at critical infrastructure companies would receive security clearances allowing them to receive the information, according to the document. Federal agencies would be required to assess whether the order raises any privacy or civil liberties risks.

To foster a two-way exchange of information, the government would ask businesses to tell the government about cyberthreats or cyberattacks. There would be no requirement to do so.

The NSA has been sharing cyberthreat information on a limited basis with companies that conduct business with the Defense Department. These companies work with sensitive data about weapon systems and technologies and are frequently the targets of cyberspying.

But the loss of valuable information has been eclipsed by fears that an enemy with the proper know-how could cause havoc by sending the computers controlling critical infrastructure systems incorrect commands or infecting them with malicious software. Potential nightmare scenarios include high-speed trains being put on collision courses, blackouts that last days or perhaps even weeks or chemical plants that inadvertently release deadly gases.

Panetta underscored the looming dangers during a speech last week in New York by pointing to the Shamoon virus that destroyed thousands of computer systems owned by Persian Gulf oil and gas companies. Shamoon, which spreads quickly through networked computers and ultimately wipes out files by overwriting them, hit the Saudi Arabian state oil company Aramco and Qatari natural gas producer RasGas.

Panetta did not directly connect Iran to the Aramco and RasGas attacks. But U.S. officials believe hackers based in Iran were behind them.

Shamoon replaced files at Aramco with the image of a burning U.S. flag and rendered more than 30,000 computers useless, Panetta said. The attack on RasGas was similar, he said.

A spokeswoman for the National Security Council, Caitlin Hayden, said the administration is consulting with members of Congress and the private sector as the order is being drafted. But she provided no information on when an order would be signed. "Given the gravity of the threats we face in cyberspace, we want to get this right in addition to getting it done swiftly," she said.
