PFT: Female ref to make regular-season debut in Detroit

Philadelphia Eagles Sign Michael VickGetty Images

In January, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie strongly hinted that coach Andy Reid is on the hot seat.? During a Thursday press conference, Lurie basically acknowledged it.

Lurie said he would make no decisions about Reid?s contract until after the 2012 season.? With Reid signed through 2013 and with Reid?s agent, Bob LaMonte, already posturing for an extension, Lurie?s words initially seemed to reflect his intentions regarding the question of whether Reid will get a new deal that applies beyond 2013.

As Lurie continued, it became more clear that, depending on 2012, there may be no 2013.

?I expect a substantially improved team,? Lurie said.? ?We all thought we were a lot better than 8-8 and we weren?t.?

This year, 8-8 apparently won?t be good enough to get Reid one more year.? ?We need substantial improvement,? Lurie said.? ?We have a very good team on paper, and paper doesn?t get you that far if you don?t maximize it.?

Lurie explained that there?s no specific level of achievement that will guarantee Reid?s return.? ?You try to make the best judgment you can after the season,? Lurie said.

There will be no formula regarding the right decision.? ?It?ll be very clear,? Lurie said.

While Lurie acknowledged that another 8-8 season could be excused by a rash of injuries, he reiterated that, generally, ?8-8 is unacceptable . . . that was a really unacceptable outcome.?

Thus, regardless of how it all turns out, Reid is officially on notice.? And Lamonte?s assertion that Lurie essentially has promised Reid a job for life has been completely debunked.

Whether Reid returns for a 15th season depends directly on how the 14th season unfolds.

Residential Decks: Just What They Are and Just What They're Made Of

As the years pass, there might come a time when every little thing in your home will begin to look dull. The exception, naturally, being your family. After a while, you just can not stand certain parts of the home anymore and simply would prefer some changes.

These modifications might either be the renovation or replacement of existing elements like windows, roof coverings, sidings, and nearby landscapes. Different spaces in the house might also be redesigned or constructed, such as bedrooms, washrooms, and kitchens. Additional projects may consist of swimming pool, patio area, outside kitchen, or fence and deck makeover or construction.

Nevertheless, all these modifications require the required monetary resources or they may simply add up to your disappointments each time you return home. On the other hand, you do not need to make these changes all at once? you could concentrate on one task at a time, beginning with the home improvement project that can supply you with the most feasible perks. For those wanting to provide their residence a remarkable makeover, pools, patios, and decks can be redesigned or added to the home.

In many states in New England, such as Maryland, where cool weather conditions normally reign, a deck can be a positive addition to the house framework. Decks Maryland residents like are those constructed from wood or composite wood? the latter patronized for being long lasting and inexpensive. On the other hand, these materials require some maintenance; wood decks commonly have to be sealed, which will certainly safeguard their durability and integrity for a number of years.

While a deck might offer that remarkable result, a Maryland roofing expert can also conduct improvements on your roof covering to provide it the essential curb appeal, which will raise your property's worth. By employing a qualified contractor supported by trustworthy suppliers and highly experienced installation employees, you can not fail in your choice of roofing materials. A new deck and a new roof can make your residence stick out in the neighborhood.

Regardless of which Maryland home improvement project you could prefer to undertake, you can always count on the right specialists to address your demands. For even more information on the topic, please visit the following web site, servicemagic.com/article.center.Home-Additions.21.html.

Interpol seeks help finding Bulgaria bomber 'accomplice'

Interpol asked for help Thursday in identifying the alleged accomplice of a suicide bomber who killed six people in Bulgaria last month and distributed images of the suspect.

In a statement, the Lyon-based global policing body urged national police forces to distribute the images, released earlier this month by Bulgarian police.

Two computer-generated pictures shows a bulky-faced man with a dark complexion, black hair and brown eyes, in one case with glasses.

Another picture came from a fake US driver's licence from the state of Michigan possibly used by the same man. There he was pictured with shoulder-length brownish hair and glasses.

Bulgaria's interior ministry has said it has "evidence that the man is linked to the terrorist act at Burgas airport".

An accomplice theory has been gaining ground since shortly after the July 18 attack, whose perpetrator has also remained unidentified.

Investigators have already released a computer-generated portrait of the presumed suicide bomber, based on pictures and data from coroners who examined his severed head found on the site of the attack.

The portrait showed a young man in his late 20s or early 30s with fair skin, light-coloured eyes, a high forehead and shortish dark brown hair.

The image was also circulated by Interpol and investigators have been trying to match DNA samples and fingerprints taken from the bomber's scattered remains with anything in international databases.

Israel has blamed Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah for the attack, which killed five Israelis and their Bulgarian bus driver and injured more than 30 other tourists. Tehran has denied any involvement.

Hot spots pinpointed as earthquake trigger points: Small droplets of friction-generated melts can lead to 'megaquakes'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have come a step closer to deciphering some of the basic mysteries and mechanisms behind earthquakes and how average-sized earthquakes may evolve into massive earthquakes.

In a paper published in the Aug. 30 issue of the journal Nature, Scripps scientists Kevin Brown and Yuri Fialko describe new information gleaned from laboratory experiments mimicking earthquake processes. The researchers discovered how fault zones weaken in select locations shortly after a fault reaches an earthquake tipping point.

They coined such locations as "melt welts" and describe the mechanism akin to an ice skater's blade reducing friction by melting the ice surface. The mechanism may be similar to "hot spots" known in automobile brake-clutch components.

"Melt welts appear to be working as part of a complicated feedback mechanism where complex dynamic weakening processes become further concentrated into initially highly stressed regions of a fault," said Brown, first author of the study and a professor in the Geosciences Research Division at Scripps. "The process allows highly stressed areas to rapidly break down, acting like the weakest links in the chain. Even initially stable regions of a fault can experience runaway slip by this process if they are pushed at velocities above a key tipping point."

"This adds to the fundamental understanding of the earthquake process because it really addresses the question of how these ruptures become energetic and dynamic and run away for long distances," said Fialko, a paper coauthor and a professor in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps.

The study's results, supported by funding from the National Science Foundation, appear to help answer a longstanding paradox in seismology. Key fault zones such as the San Andreas Fault produce far too little heat from friction compared with the size and magnitude of the earthquakes they produce. Laboratory experiments show that thermal energy normally released by friction during slip can become rapidly reduced, potentially helping to account for a "low heat flow paradox." The melt welts also may help explain certain questions in earthquake rupture dynamics such as why some slowly slipping tremor-generating events can snowball into massive earthquakes if they pass a velocity tipping point.

"This may be relevant for how you get from large earthquakes to giant earthquakes," said Brown, who used the example of last year's magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Japan. "We thought that large patches of the fault were just creeping along at a constant rate, then all of a sudden they were activated and slipped to produce a mega earthquake that produced a giant tsunami."

Fialko says the melt welt finding could eventually lead to improved "shake" maps of ground-shaking intensities, as well as improvements in structural engineering plans. Future studies include investigations about why the melt welt weakening occurs and if it applies to most or all common fault zone materials, as well as field research to locate melt welts along fault zones.

The Scripps Marine Science Development Center provided the machinery used in the study's experiments.

Nimble Storage, CommVault partner up | IT-Online

?As data growth and operational complexity continue to outpace IT budgets, organisations are looking for modern backup and recovery approaches to lower costs and improve operational efficiency.
To provide enterprises more flexibility in protecting, managing and accessing their data, CommVault and Nimble Storage are announcing the integration of Nimble Storage CS-Series arrays with CommVault Simpana snapshot management software as part of the CommVault IntelliSnap Connect Program.
As an IntelliSnap Connect partner, Nimble Storage gains access to CommVault?s snapshot management APIs to enable customers to extend their SAN investments while accelerating backup and recovery performance, reducing operational complexity and minimising risk.
Together, CommVault IntelliSnap technology and Nimble Storage CS-series enterprise storage arrays provide seamless data protection for enterprises, simplifying data recovery and eliminating the need for resource-intensive backups and complex scripting.
Simpana software?s built-in application intelligence allows customers to quickly recover data at a granular level such as individual files and e-mails or entire applications.
The solution scales easily to support thousands of snapshots and integrates application-aware protection and data deduplication for a range of hypervisors, operating systems and applications, including VMware, Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, Microsoft, Oracle, IBM and SAP databases and Windows, Linux and Unix file systems.
Nimble Storage CS-Series improvements in performance, efficiency and scalability also support longer retention periods of months. The combined CommVault and Nimble Storage offering is available to customers effective immediately.
Traditional data backup methods are being replaced as customers demand better ways to protect, manage and access data in order to derive greater value from information.
Recent research from the Enterprise Strategy Group on Data Protection Modernisation Trends in 2012, revealed that over half (55%) of all respondents will be enhancing or replacing traditional backup with a combination of snapshots, replication or both, according to Jason Buffington, senior data protection analyst.
Through its Solving Forward vision, CommVault anticipated these customer needs and has built capabilities into its Simpana software platform that enable customers to extend the value of existing hardware investments through industry leading integration and innovation.
From a single console, CommVault Simpana 9 software manages hardware snapshots, catalogs the content for granular recovery, and automates off-host, deduplicated snapshot backup to almost any storage device or cloud storage service.
The IntelliSnap Connect Program is an open development program that enables array vendors to help customers unlock and optimise their existing and future SAN investments by enabling integrated hardware snapshot management.
CommVault provides the most comprehensive compatibility matrix? for hardware snapshot management without custom scripting or solution modifications and, since the beginning of 2011, Simpana software?s IntelliSnap technology has supported nine of the top 10 best-selling storage arrays in the industry.
?As a result of our IntelliSnap Connect Program, CommVault and Nimble Storage will make the benefits of snapshot technology for data backup and recovery more accessible and practical for customers contending with too much data and too little time to back up and recover it,? says Jeff Echols, senior director of Marketing and Business Development, CommVault.
?As part of the IntelliSnap Connect Partner ecosystem, CommVault and Nimble CS-series storage arrays provide seamless data protection for enterprises, helping ensure their data is always available when they need it.?
?Nimble?s highly efficient snapshots have helped numerous customers circumvent the cost and complexity of dealing with traditional backup. With the CommVault partnership, customers can leverage the efficiency and performance of hardware based snapshots as well as benefit from the rich management feature set of the Simpana software,? says Suresh Vasudevan, CEO of Nimble Storage.

Home Addition Series: Evacuation

Last week we introduced our Home Addition Series and we are excited to pick up where we left off!? Since our last post, the home?s sun room has been demoed and excavation is not only underway but completed!

After the demolition we began digging out the foundation for the home?s new addition.? We will be adding a full basement, designed to be finished later when our homeowners needs more space to grow.? During the excavation we came across both gas and electrical lines that needed to be relocated to run through the home?s foundation once completed.

Once the excavation was finished we started the concrete phase, beginning with footings.? Footings exist to transfer the structural loads from the building, snow load, and live load, into the ground.? As such, footings are the backbone of a well built home.? To prepare for the footings, we began by laying out the foundation, forming the footings to fit, and placing the rebar.

With the footings in place, the city completed a footing inspection.? They checked the placement and size of the rebar used.? Once our work passed inspection, we poured the footings.? The finished foundation wall resulted in an eight-foot by twelve-foot block foundation, core filled every forty-inches, with an eight-foot basement height.

Next, we placed the interior and exterior drain tiles.? The drain tiles will be used to divert water along the foundation wall to a sump pump basket where it can be diverted away from the house.? We placed the drain tiles next to the footings and covered them with sand and crushed rock.

Our next steps will be to finish the concrete working, frame out the addition, install the floor joists and subfloor and frame the exterior walls.? Stay tuned as we continue on this exciting home improvement adventure!

Anthony Brogdon: 'The Great Detroit' Filmmaker On Making A ...

Does Detroit get a bad rap? First-time filmmaker Anthony Brogdon thinks so, and wants to set the record straight. His upcoming documentary, "The Great Detroit," takes a panoramic look at the city's history, scenery and people with the explicit intent of emphasizing the positive.

Fireworks, Henry Ford, puppets, Midtown's Noel Night, hydroplanes and a century-old hat shop are just a few of the topics that Brogdon explores in his 90-minute film. The project, which features dozens of interviews, has been in production for over a year and should be complete by early autumn.

The Huffington Post reached out to Brogdon to find out why a business man with a background importing promotional merchandise undertook a quest to shed some sunlight on the Motor City.

Detroit's been a popular subject for documentaries lately. Some of them focus on the city's urban gardening movement and art scene, others on its economic decline. What makes yours unique?

"The Great Detroit" examines Detroit in broad terms and not just one specific industry. It's 100% positive. We cover the business, social services, religious, education, medical, arts, recreation, technology and more. We highlighted some of Detroit's nationally known annual events. We have footage of Detroit's downtown, midtown, business districts, parks, neighborhoods, and riverfront. We cited many little known facts, important historical moments, and offer many inspiring comments by Detroiters. It's like a 90 minute commercial.

Why do you think there's a so much of a negative media focus on Detroit?

Some of the negative media focus is warranted because Detroit has declined from its status as the country's fifth-largest city, which is probably the largest drop in population of all urban cities in the country. It's not the manufacturing powerhouse it once was with so much U.S. owned manufacturing being done internationally, and our city has lost a large diverse cultural community. Plus, Detroit does have a high crime rate. Detroit is majority African-American which, in the minds of media people, deems it a candidate for such negative attention.

Some people say that Detroit's image has changed over the last few years into something of a sympathetic scrappy underdog. Chrysler's "Imported From Detroit" ads would be one example of this. I've also spoken with an entrepreneur who said one of the reasons he's opening a bicycle factory in the city is because Detroit has brand appeal. What are your thoughts on this?

I would agree that the country knows that the media has beaten up on Detroit for a long time, which has given our city the underdog perspective; however, at the same time people who really know Detroit know that Detroit isn't as bad as the media portrays, that Detroit is still recognized as a major city, that Detroit is home to the automobile industry, Motown music, Kronk boxing, electronic music and partner to our international neighbor Canada. People were happy to see the Chrysler commercials which exclaimed a pride about Detroit to the world.

What's your relationship with the city of Detroit?

I am a native Detroiter, graduate of its Detroit Public School system and a resident for all but 5 years of my life when I lived in Atlanta.

What did you discover about the city while making the film?

I discovered that Detroit has a rich history and that it's internationally recognized. Detroit's rich history includes being a major player in the war for United States independence, for being at the forefront for mass production, in professional sports having the original franchise that make up the National Football League, National Hockey Association and Major League Baseball, for in the arts being considered the birthplace for puppet theater, for being the birthplace for Kiwanis International and more. Understandably, Detroit is known for being the automobile capital and for Motown but, on an international level, Detroit is known for being the birthplace for electronic music and is recognized for hosting hydroplane boat and speed car racing among other things.

Who were the most intriguing interview subjects you spoke with and why?

In "The Great Detroit" we interview over 40 people and each have an intriguing story; however, I found many little known facts.. In the interview with a former commodore of the Detroit Yacht Club, that the land the club sits on is man-made; or in the interview with the owner of Henry the Hatter, how his business has survived over 100 years; or in the interview with the founder of Mosaic Youth Group, how talented many Detroit kids are and their quest for perfection. Or in the interview with a Belle Isle historian, how the island is the only urban recreational island in the country, and how the U.S. army forces conducted training exercises on the beach front.

While your movie clearly strives to accentuate the positives about Detroit, the city is certainly facing its share of difficulties right now. Are there thoughts about the city's economic and political woes that you'd like to share?

My documentary in 100% positive. So even though we shot footage of many of Detroit neighborhoods, we don't show images of the blight or, when interviewing the director of a soup kitchen, we didn't film while they were feeding those in need nor do we comment on the political missteps that have happened recently. My personal view about the woes you mention is that its unfortunate, that economically the city has had many setbacks mainly due to the automobile industry decline and the influx of foreign products and the political woes were by people who initially had the best intentions.

Tell us about strongdetroit.net.

Strongdetroit.net is a website that will become an online magazine to report only positive news stories, be a sounding board for dialogue on various topics about Detroit, and the retail arm for Strong Detroit merchandise.

Your biography says you have a background in business and writing. How did you get into filmmaking?

I am new to filmmaking and "The Great Detroit" is my first attempt. The thought to do this documentary has two angles. One, I want to become a big independent filmmaker, and my first feature length will be a film titled "Foot Soldiers", a script I adapted from a play that I wrote and staged on several occasions. I already have written two other screenplays. Secondly, I thought that to get experience in filmmaking, a documentary would be a great place to start. I have been working on this film for over 14 months.

What sort of obstacles did you run into as a first time filmmaker?

I really didn't run into any obstacles doing this film. The State of Michigan has a website that lists people who work in every capacity needed to make a film; this gave me a list of contacts, Plus, there's a yahoo Michigan-based group specific to the film industry where I asked questions. If I would say that I have had any obstacles, it would be in raising money. I have personally financed the film to this point, and I now have a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo.com/TheGreatDetroit.

Who helped you make the film?

Every person I have interviewed has helped me make this film for they believed enough to take the time to sit in front of the camera. My cameraman, Hugh Hatten, has been my biggest helper. He believed enough to make a deal on his fees enabling me to afford his services. My production crew is just the two of us. I direct and hold the boom mic, and he films.

When will you be finished with the film?

I have interviewed roughly 26 of the expected 40 people on my list, plus I have shot much of the supplemental footage and have edited as I go. I expect to finish the film within the next 45 days.

Where will people be able to see it?

There will be many opportunities for people to see my film, I hope to have a huge premier hopefully held at the Detroit Institute of Arts, it will be a red carpet, spotlight, fundraiser for some nonprofits. Then a weekend of showings at a local theater, screenings in local, national, and international film festivals. I'll have DVDs distributed through various gift and convenience shops throughout the metro Detroit area, and finally there will be some YouTube shorts on my channel Strong Detroit.

Anything else people should know about the movie?

This film is going to show the world another side of Detroit and I guarantee it will make Detroiters proud.

Mortgage Refinance: When To Refinance | KW OC Real Estate

???

If you have built up a lot of equity in your home, interest rates are low, and you have good credit, it may be a good idea for you to refinance. If you do not have very much equity built up (less than 10%), you may be charged extra to make up for not having sufficient equity. You will also want to check into where the current interest rate is since you obviously will not want to refinance to a higher interest rate. If interest rates are expected to drop even more in the near future, it may be wise to wait until interest rates have dropped as low as you think they will drop. To make refinancing worth, it, it is wise to refinance when the current interest rates are at least 2% lower than your current interest rate.

?

An interest rate that is at least 2% lower will save you a sufficient amount of money despite the high expense paid to refinance. If you are not paying the thousands it cost to refinance, chances are that you are making up for that in higher interest rates. To get the lowest interest rate possible when refinancing, you, of course, need to have a decently good credit score as well (around 678 or higher). It is also a good idea, when thinking about refinancing, to make sure all your payments are up to date and you do not have any outstanding payments or late fees that need to be paid.

?

If you, however, do not have much equity in your home, you are almost done paying off your loan, or your property value has gone down, you may not want to refinance. You will also probably want to hold off on refinancing if your credit score has gone down. It is therefore important to check your credit score to be certain that you have a good score.

It also couldn?t hurt to take the time to improve your credit score from good to very good or excellent if you have the time. If interest rates are very low, however, and your credit score is good enough, you may want to refinance right away.

?

See about a mortgage refinance today!

Gas safety in your home - Newbie Home Improvement

Gas safetyAccording to sad statistics, 350 people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning due to improperly installed or broken gas systems. When fossil fuels such as coal and oil will not burn properly spare carbon monoxide appears. It is a colorless gas having no odor that can kill quickly. Fortunately, there are a number of things that can be done to improve gas safety in your home. And the first and most important one is to call a professional Gas Safe engineer in London.

Professional and immediate help of registered engineers

To ensure the security of your home, you must check that all facilities and equipment are installed by a licensed professional. All gas engineers who registered with the Gas Safe Register have identity documents detailing the level of work they are qualified to perform.

Prevention is better than cure

It is wise to have your gas system checked regularly. You must have your equipment carefully inspected annually by a qualified engineer from We Fix Now. This specialist will carry out tests and checks to establish your appliances are working safely. He can ensure all piping that has been improperly installed or worked in hazardous conditions is fixed now to ensure safety.

How to detect the problem earlier

By installing carbon monoxide detector or CO detector, you will know about the danger before it is too late. As mentioned above, carbon monoxide is a colorless gas having no odor that can not be noticed without the use of a detector or an awareness of the symptom.

The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning

Exposure to this gas can cause serious illness, including brain damage and death in severe cases. If you have any symptoms, such as headaches, vertigo, nausea, breathlessness or loss of consciousness, you should call emergency medical services.

Another danger is that most of the symptoms are very similar to those of the flu, food poisoning, viral infections or even fatigue so it is possible for people to confuse the symptoms of CO poisoning with other symptoms.

One way to distinguish is to evaluate them while you are away from your home. If you experience symptoms at home or they improve when you leave the house, it could indicate that it is a carbon monoxide poisoning and not another disease. You should also see if the same thing is common for family members who share the property with you.

To improve gas safety in your home use a licensed engineer, ask your appliances checked annually, install a carbon monoxide detector and check the symptoms.

How ocean currents affect global climate becoming better understood

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Florida State University oceanographer Kevin Speer has a "new paradigm" for describing how the world's oceans circulate -- and with it he may help reshape science's understanding of the processes by which wind, water, sunlight and other factors interact and influence the planet's climate.

A Florida State University professor of oceanography with a passion for teaching, Speer and a colleague recently published a significant paper in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Working with John Marshall, an oceanography professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Speer reviewed -- or essentially synthesized -- vast amounts of previous data on ocean circulation (including their own earlier papers). As a result, they have created what Speer calls a new paradigm in the study of ocean currents on a global scale.

Here's how it works: Basically, the oceans, together with the atmosphere, rebalance heat on the planet. The sun shines on Earth and heats up the tropics more than the poles. Near the poles, the ocean is cold and the water sinks; near the equator, the surface of the ocean is inviting and warm -- and floats on top of the colder deep water.

So the question is this: Where does the water that goes down come back up?

Speer, Marshall and other oceanographers now believe that it comes back up in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica -- not as much in the warm oceans as had been previously thought.

"We're not saying that nothing comes up in the rest of the World Ocean, just that the main thrust is in the Southern Ocean," Speer said. "To a large extent it's driven by the wind."

Very strong winds, to be precise.

In the rough waters around Antarctica, sailors call those winds the "Roaring Forties" and the "Furious Fifties." They originate near the Equator, where hot air rises and then is pushed toward the North and South poles by cooler air that rushes in to take its place.

The resulting "eddy-driven upwelling" in the Southern Ocean, as Speer characterizes it, may in fact describe the most important process to date that helps scientists understand the role of the ocean and climate.

Speer, who holds a doctorate in physical oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program, spent years living in France as an oceanographic researcher for a French governmental agency. (Yes, he's fluent in French.)

Today, from his office on the Florida State campus, Speer serves as interim director of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, a warren of intriguing laboratories just a few steps outside his door. It is there that Speer helps students and postdoctoral researchers learn about how climate works.

The laboratory's equipment includes a large, vintage rotating table designed nearly a half-century ago by the lab's founder, Florida State meteorology Professor Richard Pfeffer. (The device may be old, but it's one of the biggest and best in the United States, Speer says). Here students can recreate the ocean's churning and study natural phenomena such as the Antarctic circumpolar current.

Speer and his students have been studying ocean currents thanks to $2.5 million in funding from a larger $10 million National Science Foundation grant that FSU shares with eight other universities and institutions worldwide. Research has included releasing tracers and floats into the ocean to study the mixing and spreading of currents.

One of Speer's graduate students, Druv Balwada, recently took part in a joint U.S.-United Kingdom research program to study ocean currents aboard a ship in the Southern Ocean.

Mexico investigates why federal cops fired at U.S. govt. car

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? Mexican authorities are trying to sort out why a U.S. Embassy vehicle was shot up by federal police on a rural back road in mountains south of the capital, leaving two U.S. government workers wounded.

Officials from both nations said the federal officers were chasing criminals Friday morning when a hail of bullets was fired at the embassy sport utility vehicle, but the accounts left many questions unanswered.

The two American workers were taken to a hospital in the nearby resort city of Cuernavaca. One had a gunshot wound in his leg and the other was wounded in the stomach and a hand, said a Mexican government official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Hospital officials in Cuernavaca said the wounded were later transferred to a hospital in Mexico City in stable condition.

The U.S. Embassy did not release the names of the injured workers, who it said were heading to a military training base south of Mexico City. Its statement said the employees and a Mexican naval captain traveling with them were fired on by a group of men, and were chased when they tried to escape. The naval officer was not seriously injured.

Mexico's federal police agency acknowledged that its own officers fired on the embassy's SUV, which appeared to be armored and has diplomatic plates. It said the officers were in the area hunting for criminals, but it did not explain what happened.

Its statement said at least four vehicles fired at the embassy vehicle on a road south of the capital, but it did not clarify whether any or all of them were federal police units. Federal police spokesmen did not respond to The Associated Press requesting further comment.

A U.S. official who was briefed on the shooting said later that all the shots were fired by federal police.

Mexican prosecutors said in a statement late Friday that 12 officers based in Mexico City were being held for questioning. Officers based in the capital have jurisdiction only in Mexico City and in four suburbs of neighboring Mexico State, not in Cuernavaca.

The embassy employees were on their way to do training or related work at a military base, the U.S. official said.

"Apparently the police were looking for some bad guys and they ran into each other," said the official, who agreed to discuss the incident only if his name was not used. "It looks like it was just a bad mistake ... they just shot and kept shooting."

The shooting broke out in an area that has been used by common criminals, drug gangs and leftist rebels in the past.

Mexican officials said the Americans' vehicle initially was fired on by a carload of gunmen who first displayed their weapons as the embassy SUV drove along a stretch of dirt road off a highway that connects Mexico City to Cuernavaca. The U.S. driver of the Toyota tried to escape, but three other vehicles joined the original one in pursuing them down the dirt road and onto the highway.

Passengers in all four vehicles fired, and the Mexican naval captain called for help, government officials said. Federal police officers and Mexican soldiers then showed up on the road.

The SUV stopped on the highway, but it wasn't clear if the driver was halted by the chasers or stopped because of the wounds.

The vehicle was riddled with bullets, most concentrated around the passenger-side window. The area was cordoned off and guarded by more than 100 heavily armed marines and soldiers, and the highway was closed for hours. Investigators examined what appeared to be shell casings.

The U.S. Embassy said it was helping Mexico's government in its investigation of the incident. It said the wounded were not agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration or the FBI, but officials for neither country identified what agency they work for.

"They are receiving appropriate medical care and are in stable condition. We have no further information to share at this time," said Victoria Nuland, a State Department spokeswoman in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas who closely follows the affairs with Mexico, said both countries appeared to be working together to find out what went wrong.

"If the Mexicans are cooperating with U.S. officials to find out exactly what happened here then I don't think this will affect the U.S.-Mexico relationship," he said.

Attacks on diplomatic personnel in Mexico were once considered rare, but this was the third shooting incident in two years.

In 2011, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was killed and another wounded in a drug gang shooting in northern Mexico.

A drug-gang shooting in 2010 in the border city of Ciudad Juarez killed a U.S. consulate employee, her husband and another man.

While Mexico City has largely been spared the drug violence that hits other parts of the country, Cuernavaca has been the scene of drug gang turf battles involving remnants of the Beltran Leyva cartel.

Police failure to find Tia's body not due to one officer says Met ...

August 23, 2012

? The Editor World News Tomorrow ? world news tomorrow

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW ? The police failure to find Tia Sharp?s body more quickly, was not down to an individual officer, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner has said.? Officers investigating the disappearance of the schoolgirl, searched the New Addington home of her grandmother four times, before her body was eventually found in the loft on August 10.

The Met Police has apologized to the 12-year-olds mother Natalie Sharp for the delay in finding her body.Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said: ?If we thought it was an individual human error then that would explain it, but we are carrying out a review because we are not happy that explains it.

?We are trying not to have a knee-jerk reaction, we need some time to understand what happened and what failed to happen.?We want to learn lessons from this particular case. We have apologized and I repeat that apology today to Tia?s mum and family for not having found Tia?s body sooner.?

Mr Hogan-Howe said he hopes the internal review will provide answers about what happened in the coming weeks. He added: ?We have explained it was human error but we want to go into it more. You can always blame the individual but we want to understand the processes and management decisions we have made that led to the failure.

?In a few weeks? time we will have some conclusions so that we make sure it doesn?t happen again.? Stuart Hazell the partner of Tia?s grandmother, has been charged with her murder. The 37-year-old is due to appear at the Old Bailey on November 19.

Is It Legal?: School Denies Valedictorian Her Diploma for Using ...

9:50 am ET August 22, 2012

Valedictorian

A high school in Prague, Oklahoma is refusing to handover a diploma to their valedictorian after she accidentally used the word ?hell? instead of ?heck? in her graduation speech. She submitted a copy for the school to take a look at before her speech, which included the word ?heck,? but the word ?hell? accidentally came out. So, is it legal?

Seth Berenzweig and Eric Schwartzreich weighed in on this issue today during Fox and Friends.

Eric Schwartzreich believes the school is doing the right thing by asking for an apology, saying, ?We?re dealing with First Amendment issues, the word ?hell,? I don?t know if that is the appropriate four-letter word that we are talking about or what the issue is ? this happened in Oklahoma. The issue is that the school has the right, a responsibility. The speech was submitted, she deviated from the speech and now the school is making the argument that ?We have a right to protect our students.??

Seth Berenzweig believes the ?School gets an ?F? for the handling of the situation,? and that it?s completely ridiculous and unreasonable that the school would force her to write an apology.
