Older people denied life-saving surgery, top doctors claim | The Times

Older people are being denied life-saving treatment because of age discrimination in the NHS, leading surgeons say today. Patients in their seventies and eighties are routinely told they are too old for operations to treat cancer or a heart condition, regardless of their underlying physical health, according to a report by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS).

The report says that decisions on whether older people are put forward for surgery are often based on outdated assumptions of age and fitness. It also warns that older people are more likely to become victims of so-called rationing in the health service,
